GPS:  15 46 24 S 144 14 42 E
Brooklyn Wildlife Sanctuary
Kondaparinga Road (heading to Mt Mulligan) - 7 km of dirt track off the Peninsula Development Rd (south west of Mt Carbine).

This area for self-sufficient bush camping is across the causeway of the Mitchell River.  There are no facilities however, water would be available from the river.  You must take your rubbish out with you.

Sites:  Undesignated sandy/grassed area on banks of the Mitchell River. Undulating areas with some shade.  Not suitable for big rigs.

Mobile Phone Reception:  No

For this trip we were in our tent & 4WD.  There was two motorhomes, a caravan and a couple of tents here at the time of our visit.  One indigenous family were trying their hand at fishing.  A pleasant laid back spot.

From here we drove through a lot of bulldust to Mount Mulligan (160 km west of Cairns) to see the remains of the township (GPS: 16 51 22 S 144 52 16E), the chimney stacks and the cemetery (where those are buried from the 1921 mine disaster).  Permission to go onto aboriginal land and Mount Mulligan Station should be sought prior to your visit (see photos below for contact details). The station can also be accessed via Dimbulah from the south.  Please note gates should be left as you found them ie: if closed, close them.

Our rating: 3
